Leadership and the Coronavirus

Liderstvo i Corona virus

A few weeks ago, most of us were enjoying our daily routines and business challenges. We would solve challenges with our teams through face-to-face meetings, establishing close contact, which is still one of the most effective tools for solving problems.

Enjoying our own business ventures, many of us began analyzing the first business quarter, analyzing or revising business plans for 2020. Rarely did any organization, when preparing its risk analysis for 2020, take into account the impact of a pandemic as a possible risk factor; and even where there were such cases, I believe that for many that risk factor was characterized as insignificant.

Unfortunately, an isolated case that appeared in December 2019, for us in a distant country, grew into the COVID-19 pandemic, thereby creating difficult conditions for life and business, probably with lasting consequences that will manifest in many spheres of life.

In the early 1990s, the U.S. Army War College coined the acronym “VUCA”(1). The acronym is made up of the initial letters of the English words: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.

  • “Volatility” refers to an organization's ability to respond in a quality way to rapid, frequent and significant changes.
  • “Uncertainty” refers to situations in which events and final outcomes are unpredictable.
  • “Complexity” represents a multitude of issues and factors, some of which may be interconnected.
  • “Ambiguity” represents a lack of clarity and difficulty in understanding the current situation correctly.

Taking into account the entire context of this acronym, we can certainly confirm that we live in a world overly dominated by the characteristics that the “VUCA” acronym represents.

In the future, those people and organizations that learn to cope with the above circumstances will succeed. Those who do not learn will surely disappear from the market.

The current situation is difficult and forces us to step out of our comfort zone. Faced with many challenges, we should be aware that a crisis also represents an opportunity. Let's use the current circumstance as an opportunity and act together.

This means you need to take things into your own hands and become true leaders.

So, the skills we need today to solve challenges are useful far beyond the Corona crisis, therefore:
  • Stay calm, because people need stability, and we are role models;
  • Take care of people and make sure everyone feels welcome, understood, valued and loved;
  • Make small decisions quickly, using knowledge rather than guesswork, learn from them and adapt;
  • Learn new skills quickly, so we can respond better to circumstances from the environment and advance quickly in any situation;
  • Regardless of the current circumstances, do not settle for mediocrity, because our competitors will still take advantage of the empty space.
